CHILD LABOR CHILD ABUSE

Child Labor Sign

Can you imagine that in this world today in the 21st century, there are children as young as five years working? What makes it even more unbelievable is that many of these young kids are working 8-12 hour shifts.  I am not just referring to human trafficking: I am referring to working in fields, factories, etc.

DEFINITION

The International Labour Organization defines child labor:

"The term “child labor” is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

It refers to work that:

  • is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children; and
  • interferes with their schooling by:
  • depriving them of the opportunity to attend school;
  • obliging them to leave school prematurely; or
  • requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work."http://www.ilo.org/ipec/facts/lang--en/index.htm

CHILD LABOR: ITS A GLOBAL PROBLEM

 As you will note from the map, the European, African and South American countries are the worse for child labor. However, it is interesting that the United States falls within the medium risk range given the fact that this is an industrialized nation.

"Human trafficking is a global epidemic, but it doesn’t only take place in foreign countries. The Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report for 2012 states that the United States is a top “source, transit and destination country for men, women, and children–both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals–subjected to forced labor, debt bondage, involuntary servitude, and sex trafficking.” Due to the clandestine nature of human trafficking and the under-reporting of the crime, it is often difficult to determine just where in the United States this horrific crime occurs the most. The Department of State lists the top three states with the most human trafficking activity are California, New York, and Texas" http://humantraffickingsearch.org/top-3-states-for-human-trafficking/.
